Jordan Spieth will play alongside Tiger Woods as the 14-time major winner continues comeback from injury at the Valspar Championship this week.
Henrik Stenson will complete a star-studded grouping for the first two rounds of the tournament.
Spieth said in his press conference yesterday that he was excited about playing alongside arguably the greatest player of all time.
”I stood on that tee. ‘We were trying to get off quickly in front of the groups, and I remember being unbelievably nervous on that shot, and for most of the shots I hit in the round – even though it’s a practice round, and he was my teammate,” Spieth said when talking about his first experience playing with Woods in a Presidents Cup practice round.
“They went eagle-birdie-birdie or something like that to start. I thought, ‘Man, this must be what it’s been like for the last 20 years for guys.”’
Every time that Spieth has played with Woods, he has shot the lower score.
All three players in the group will have one eye on Augusta next month and the year’s first major.
Another player who will be looking ahead to the Masters is Rory McIlroy who will play alongside Justin Rose and Gary Woodland.
McIlroy needs to win at Augusta to complete the career grand slam. Spieth believes that the Northern Irishman has the best chance to complete the feat before him – purely because of where the Masters falls on the calendar.
Spieth, McIlroy and Phil Mickelson are the three players who are just one win away from completing the grand slam.
“Rory has the best opportunity to win the Grand Slam, given the first Major this year is the Masters and he needs to win the Masters to become a Grand Slam champion,” said Spieth.
“But it’s not like I have talked to Rory about it. I think the only thing I can think of going back would have been at the PGA when I joked about bringing the US Open Trophy into a Tuesday round at Whistling Straits with Phil. At the time I still had two more legs.
“I mean at this point with the way that Phil is playing and obviously the fire power that myself and Rory have, I think it’s just kind of a crap shoot on who can get it.
“Obviously it’s going to be hardest for me from right now given they have an opportunity before I do.”
