Tiger Woods makes his return to golf at the Masters and is looking for major title number 15.
It has only been in the past few days that we found out that Tiger Woods would compete at Augusta. But reports of huge improvements in Tiger’s game since he withdrew from the Farmers Insurance Open two months ago and took some time away from competition have made many people optimistic that he can win his first major since the 2008 US Open.
It is hard to know what a good week is for Tiger. Some people think that if he can make the cut then that is a successful week, some think he can make the top 20. One thing is for sure, Woods would not be at Augusta if he did not think he could win.
“I want another green jacket. I’ve got four Green Jackets, I want five.” Woods said.
He has slipped to 111 in the world and has had some major issues with his short game in his most recent starts.
However, recently there have been many reports about Woods improvements in practice. Perhaps the most impressive of these was that Woods had shot 66 using a worst-ball format where he plays two balls and plays from the worst position of the two.
The former world number one has looked more relaxed than he has in a long time at Augusta this week. He was all smiles in his press conference and has confirmed that he will play in the Par-3 contest today with his children caddying for him. This will be the first time that Woods has played in the contest since 2004. In the past he has described the event as “distracting.”
It is hard to imagine that there will not be at least signs of some rust. He has played very little competitive golf over the past year but if anybody can come back and win straight away then it is the man who is arguably the greatest golfer of all time.
Can Woods win this week? The head says no but the heart says yes. It may be too soon for Woods this week, but the signs are encouraging for the rest of the season. Golf is a better sport when Tiger is involved and there will be plenty of people hoping that he will be in contention on Sunday afternoon.
